The Public Citizen consumer group released a statement after the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sustained the federal government's rule that has set a 25-mile-per-hour air bag crash test standard instead of a 30-mile-per-hour one. The 30-mph high-speed test is 44 percent more stringent than the 25-mph test, according to the consumer group that has referred to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that an additional 400 lives will be lost annually because of the reduction in protection.
Implementing the new 25-mile-per-hour standard will give auto manufacturers the ability to reduce vehicle occupant protection when involved in high-speed crashes, which Public Citizen thinks gives incentive. Since it is cheaper to depower air bags, the consumer group has called on manufacturers to live up to their promise that they will not take advantage of the new standard to reduce occupant protection.
