Auto recalls in 2004 already surpass records set in 2000

General Motors has announced it is recalling 1.23 million vehicles, increasing the total number of vehicles recalled in the U.S. to 24.8 million this year. The number of recalled vehicles has now topped the previous 2000 set record high of 23.6 million vehicle recalls in the U.S. The five largest U.S. automakers have all recalled more vehicles this year than for all of 2003.

GM, the world's largest auto company, has so far recalled 9.43 million vehicles in the U.S., followed by Daimler Chrysler at 5.12 million and Ford Motor Co. at 4.21 million.
