Two Teens Die After SUV Rollover in California

June 20, 2007

A Chevy Tahoe carrying seven high school seniors collided with another car on a twisting San Bernardino road last week, causing the SUV to rollover several times, ejecting four of the boys. Of the passengers in the SUV, Adrian Barajas, 18, of Highland, died at the scene of the crash; David Rivera, 18, died Monday after struggling in an ICU at Loma Linda University Medical Center; a third student remains in critical condition.

Rolled Down an Embankment

The accident took place the day before the students' graduation from San Gorgonio High School in San Bernardino. The students were returning from a school-sponsored seniors' pregraduation picnic held at Yucaipa Regional Park, and reckless driving may have been a factor. The other car involved, a Honda Civic, was carrying other students from the same school.

Apparently the Civic clipped the SUV, causing it to roll down a steep embankment off Oak Glen Road in Yucaipa.

Tragic End to the School Year

The driver of the SUV, Gonzalo Favela, and the other students involved in the accident were able to attend their high school graduation ceremony held today.
