Federal safety regulators asked DaimlerChrysler to recalled 600,000 vehicles

December 10, 2004

Federal safety regulators have asked DaimlerChrysler AG to recall 600,000 Dodge Durango and Dakota trucks because their wheels could fall off. The investigation includes vehicles from the 2000 to 2003 model years.

Chrysler spokesman Max Gates noted the Durango SUVs and Dakota pickups have not yet been recalled, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made the recommendation after investigating reports of upper ball joint separation on dozens of vehicles.

Suspension can collapse and the wheel can fall off when the upper ball joint separates. Gates admits Chrysler realizes the problem with the upper ball joints but does not think the problem is large enough to be classified as a safety defect.

Gates claims vehicle owners will hear noises coming from the vehicle, giving advanced warning of an upper ball joint failing. In addition, Gates said if the upper ball joint fails, it is most likely to occur at low speeds and during turns.
