An Australian invention called Drivecam has already sold 30,000 units in the U.S. The vehicle camera records incidents while driving when it is mounted behind the rear vision mirror on the front windscreen looking back into the interior of the vehicle and ahead towards the road.
Recording both pictures and sounds, parents are able to remove the CompactFlash card that mounts into the bottom of the camera, download it into their computer and see how their kids are behaving. Not just for parents, the Drivecam can help fleet managers, or other people who want to see close calls or bad driving behavior before it results in an accident.
The camera has reportedly already saved companies a lot of money in insurance claims in the U.S. by offering proof that a driver was not at fault. Drivecam says the use of its cameras reduces accident investigations from about 30 days to just one or two days.
Equipped with a red panic button, the camera allows a driver to record other events, such as a mugging or road rage incident. Selling for about $1,500 in the U.S., Drivecam has been picked up by 400 companies so far.
