Ford Expands Recall to 6.7 Million Vehicles

August 10, 2006

Ford Motor Company expanded its existing recall by 1.2 million vehicles on Thursday in an effort to reduce the risk of vehicle fires in certain models of trucks, vans, and sport utility vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Ford said they have determined the cause of reported malfunctions and identified the vehicles prone to catch fire.

The safety administration said the investigation into the fires was one of the most extensive ever. Since the investigation began in 2004, the agency has received more than 1,400 complaints of cruise controls malfunctioning and confirmed 65 vehicle fires.

Safety officials believe that many of the fires are attributable to brake fluid leaks. The NHTSA closed its inquiry into the fires after discovering this and several other contributing factors.

Vehicles being recalled include: 1994 to 2002 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty pickup trucks; 2000 to 2002 Excursions; 1994 to 1996 Econoline vans; 1996 to 2002 E-450 vans; and 1998 Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers.
