A subdivision of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into a possible fuel tank defect in all 1999 and 2000 model year Kia Sportage vehicles.
In January 2006, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) began evaluating reports of fuel leakage in 1999/2000 model year Kia Sportage vehicles. After initial evaluation the ODI expanded their investigation to include all Kia vehicles with the same or similar fuel storage tank system.
According to the agency, which is responsible for investigating possible auto defects, they have received over 70 reports from Kia owners about this possible fuel tank defect in vehicles with model years from 1996 to 2002.
According to Kia Motors America, corrosion is the culprit in this fuel storage tank defect. Two types of auto defects can occur because of this problem: (1) exterior corrosion damages the PVC protective coating affecting the lower tank and, (2) corrosion damages the fuel sending unit affecting the upper tank.
This investigation is currently ongoing and no recall has been issued to fix this problem.
When fuel tanks are defective, it can increase the risk of a fuel fed fire in an accident. This can drastically increase the risk of passenger injuries and fatalities.
If you have experienced any problems with your Kia or any other vehicle, it is important to contact the NHTSA to file a complaint. The agency is responsible for gather possible auto defect complaints. When a trend is witnessed, the agency may launch an official investigation to determine whether an auto defect exists. If a vehicle or any of its components poses a safety risk or contains an auto defect, the NHTSA will act accordingly to protect consumers.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a vehicle that you suspect harbors a defective part or system, you may wish to contact a qualified attorney to learn more about your legal rights and options. You may be able to seek compensation for your losses and suffering.
