Major Recalls: Ford, Volvo, Chrysler

November 30, 2006

The government has announced several recalls affecting more than 300,000 Ford, Volvo, and Chrysler automobiles.

The majority of these vehicles are passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, and station wagons manufactured by Volvo - a unit of Ford Motor Co. - for the 1999-2002 model years, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Recalls: Volvo

The Volvo recalls were issued over a malfunctioning electronic throttle module. The malfunction may cause the throttle to go into "limp mode" which limits the vehicle's speed to 10 to 30 mph, said the NHTSA.

Affected cars should be taken to dealerships for the installation of upgraded throttle control software to correct the problem. Affected models include:

  • Volvo c70
  • Volvo S60
  • Volvo S70
  • Volvo V70XC
  • Volvo XC70

The Chrysler Recalls

DaimlerChrysler is recalling almost 128,000 2005-2006 Chrysler Pacificas . The vehicle has faulty fuel pump software that can cause the engine to stall unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion, causing a crash.

The vehicles are to be brought to dealerships for the replacement of the fuel pump module, and reprogramming of the powertrain control module.

Chrysler is also recalling over 2000 Chrysler Sebring sedans from the 2007 model year over a faulty hood latch that can break, and cause the hood to swing open while the car is moving.

The latches will be replaced by dealerships at no cost.

The NHTSA said Chrysler has also begun mailing an addendum to the owner's manual to owners of more than 18,000 2007 Jeep Compass SUV's because the original manuals do not adequately warn about the increased rollover risk of SUV's.

The Ford Recalls

Ford is recalling 422 Ford Crown Victorias and Mercury Grand Marquis sedans from the 2007 model year because the windshield is not properly secured to the body, said the NHTSA.

Windshields will be replaced by dealerships at not cost.
