Recent Recalls Due to Auto Defects

June 5, 2006

The following are some vehicle recalls, which have been issued over the last couple of weeks in light of auto defects.

Nissan Frontier Pickups Recalled

Nissan has recalled 44,000 Frontier King Cab pickup trucks, model years 2005 and 2006, due to a faulty fuel cap. Approximately 2,000 of the affected trucks are in Canada or Mexico. The defective fuel cap can come off during a side impact, thus spilling fuel and increasing the risk of a fuel fed fire . The recall, which was supposed to begin in April 2006, will require Nissan to notify all owners of affected vehicles that they should bring their truck into a dealer to have the fuel cap replaced at no cost.

Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner SUVs Recalled

Ford is recalling over 134,000 Mercury Mariner and Escape SUVs, model year 2005, to fix faulty driver's side padding , which is intended to reduce the risk of injury during an accident. To date, no injuries or accidents have been reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in relation to this auto defect.

Ford is also recalling 150,000 of these same vehicles for problems with the driver's head protection safety features . The auto maker will be making alterations to the energy-absorbing foam in the affected areas of the vehicle.

Ford Mustangs Recalled

Ford is recalling 20,000 Mustang Cobra sports cars, model years 2003 and 2004, due to an auto defect involving the accelerator pedal. Owners have filed complaints that the pedal can become caught in the floor carpeting, thus causing a vehicle crash . By late January 2006, at least 100 complaints had been received. Two accidents and one injury have been reported due to this auto defect so far. The company is going to inform affected vehicle owners that the auto defect can be repaired at a local dealership at no cost. Ford claims that other Mustangs are not affected by this auto defect recall, though the government has investigated similar problems with the Mustang convertible and GT.

GM Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS Sedans Recalled

GM is recalling nearly 13,000 2006 model year Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTC sedans with V8 engines due to defective power steering hoses. The defective power steering hoses are prone to separate and leak fluid, causing a driver to lose steering power at lower speeds or prompting a vehicle fire . The automaker will replace the defective parts at no cost to affected vehicle owners.
