Maintaining tires can help avoid blowouts

April 1, 2005

The care put into your vehicle's tires could help avoid tire blowouts that can lead to serious accidents and death. In addition to avoiding uneven wear, poor performance and blowouts, proper tire maintenance can help extend tire life and save fuel.

According to the GM Car Care Council, 26 percent of the vehicles inspected at check lanes during the last Car Care Month had low air pressure in one or more of their tires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates tire failures and blowouts contribute to 414 deaths and 10,275 non-fatal injuries every year in the U.S.

The leading cause of tire failure, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, is because of under inflation. The excessive stresses and heat caused by underinflation or overloading can lead to tire failure, which could result in a crash leading to vehicle damage, serious injury or death.

Should a tire blowout occur while driving, drivers are advised to gently apply the brakes in order to regain control. Slamming on the brakes can cause swerving and radical movement in the direction of the blowout and can cause fishtailing. Every month, a tire will typically lose a pound or two of pressure, and changing weather conditions can affect the rate the tire looses air.

Tire blowouts are not uncommon, but drivers are still very unaware of how to prevent and react to them. Regular car maintenance and checkups can eliminate preventable vehicle accidents like tire blowouts.
