In 1996 GM was considered to have the worst latches in crashes. Slide door latches on some of the GM cars, including the Cadillac Cimarron, are three times more likely to fail in a crash than any other car. These figures are according to the NHTSA analysis of more than 11,000 highway crashes.

Cadillac DeVilles have been recalled due to faulty air bags.

GM recalled 224,000 Cadillac Deville large sedans in the U.S. to replace a potentially faulty side impact-sensing module that can cause side air bags to deploy for no reason or to never deploy. GM had received 306 complaints that the side air bag on the driver or passengers side deployed without any cause. One accident and 61 minor injuries were reported. The NHTSA had investigated the defective Cadillacs prior to the recall.

The 1995 Cadillac Seville STS was designed for an 18.8 gallon steel tank but GM changed the design and used a 20-gallon plastic tank without testing the car with the plastic tank. Internal GM reports show the bottom of the gas tank was only 4.5 inches off the ground and the lowest point of the vehicle. $5.5 million verdict against GM resulted for the Cadillac Seville defect.

GM is recalling 35,000 Model year 1998-99 Cadillac Sevilles because of fires starting in the generator even when the engine is not on.

GM has added 103,000 Cadillacs from model year 1995 for inadvertent airbag deployment to the recall after GM received 301 complaints, including 130 airbag related injuries. The NHTSA received 166 complaints of inadvertent airbag deployment, including 92 injuries.
