Ford 2002 Ford Recalls

February 13, 2002

Ford recalled 2002 Ford Truck Rangers, which affects a potential 1,096 units. Manufactured from May 2001 to January 2002, the manual transmission trucks equipped with the FX4 package has a rear axle differential case that could fracture under a high torque event. This could happen if a driver accelerates rapidly from a stop or when a spinning tire suddenly gains traction. A differential fracture could lead to wheel lock-up.

In response to the Ford recall problem dealers will replace the rear axle assembly. An awareness letter was to be sent around February 11, 2002 to the owners advising that a dealer can inspect the rear differential prior to parts availability if the customer wishes. A follow up letter will be sent in April when parts are available asking owners to return the vehicles to dealers to have the rear axle assembly replaced. The owner notification is expected to begin February-March 2002. The owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not received the free remedy within reasonable time should contact Ford directly.

Ford recalled 1995 Ford Mustang, 1995 Mercury Sable, and 1995 Ford Taurus, which affect a potential 695,260 units. Manufactured from April 1994 to August 1995, the defect is on certain Taurus/Sable vehicles equipped with 3.0 liter and 3.8-liter engines and Mustang vehicles with 3.8 liter and 5.0 liter engines. On these Ford vehicles it is possible for the engine-cooling fan bearing to seize. In this circumstance excessive heat could generate, melting the fan motor electrical connector. The components inside the cooling fan motor could ignite and result in an under hood fire.

In response to the Ford recall problems the dealers will inspect the engine cooling fan assembly and install a circuit breaker. When the cooling fan is inoperative the fan and motor assembly will be replaced. January 2002 the manufacturer began to send owner notification, and those owners who do not receive the free recall fix should contact Ford directly.

Ford recalled 1994-1997 Mustangs and 1995-1997 Lincoln Town Cars, which affects a potential 911 units. These defective Ford vehicles that had their driver's air bag modules replaced after April 5, 2000 may have insufficient welds on the replacement driver's air bag inflators. This could prevent proper inflation of the airbag, leading to an improper deploy in a crash, resulting in serious injuries.

In response to the Ford defect the dealers will inspect and replace driver's airbag modules as needed. The owner notification began on October 5, 2001, and owners who do not receive the free defective fix should contact Ford directly.
