The 2002 Kia Sedona had the worst performance of any minivan that has ever been put through a bumper crash test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducted the test. In four tests the Kia Sedona went through it suffered an average damage of $2,437, moving a speed of 5 miles per hour. The worst of the Kia damage was $4,305 when the minivan was driven into a flat barrier and both front air bags deployed and cracked the windshield and the top of the instrument panel.

The chief operating officer of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said the Kia performance was the worst of any minivan tested, and they have been testing bumpers as far back as 1969. Ratings of the test are based on the damage done to the bumper and other parts of the vehicle at a low speed to imitate the impact that most often occurs in commuter traffic and in parking lots.
